I find I am in my head a lot thinking and not noticing people as they pass by. If my thoughts aren't positive, I generate worry or not caring to others when they see me even though I don't see them. Once I attended a speech contest where a young girl walked up to the podium and started her speech. It was unbelievably good. The title caught my attention right away. So much so, she made me go into reflective mode. Unfortunately, my reflective face appears looks like "worry" to others. When I stopped reflecting I noticed of all the people in the audience, she was looking at me. I can only imagine what she thought based on the look on my face. She started stuttering and never really recovered. I felt really bad. I knew I had affected her. I told myself from this point on, I would always stay present for others so they could get how great they are. A smile makes a huge difference to people. Especially the senior folks. When they see me smile, they light up like you wouldn't believe. So thanks Joy for reminding us how important a smile is, and it doesn't cost anything!

Melody

It seems to me that even the big decisions come from a bunch of small ones. Like when I just decided to attend a meeting for a doctoral program one evening. Just weeks later I was enrolled and now 21/2 years later, I am ready to graduate. I think though the BIG decisions come from a strong higher purpose drive. I wanted to get my degree because I want to make a difference in the world around helping others unleash their potential. And I want this for hundreds of people, not just a few. The passion is in my heart, doing the little things, actually puts my heart on the table and makes it a reality.

Whatever this age is, is isn't the age of the young person who can find a middle-class standard of living in American manufacturing. Good paying factory jobs for high-school educated people are quickly vanishing from our country. Everyone is challenged to draw on their strengths and talents to survive, much less prosper, in the 21st century economy. Opportunities do abound, however, for people who open their hearts and minds. Many people will need help making this transition, though.....the thousands of displaced autoworkers who will never see another job that pays $40/hr for union-protected work. The millions of inner-city youth who have no clue what they're capable of, or how to gain access to skill-enhancing institutions and organizations. A clarion call to those who have - think about how you can give. Relative to most of the world, there is an abundance of wealth and opportunity in this country - the challenge is how to pass along the knowledge to ACCESS these opportunities. A young person who quits school in the 10th grade has a high probability of becoming part of what Cornel West calls the "prison-industrial complex." Without the tools to compete, the intellectual tools to recognize the opportunity-in-your-face, the miserable (but highly lucrative to their corporate owners) prison-industrial complex will be the biggest growth industry in the United States.

The small things in life...like the moment I arranged to sit next to the attractive girl in political science, who's been my wife for 35 years. Like the moment I decided to walk into ROTC orientation in 1974, and retired from the Army after 20 years in 1995. A lot of things come to mind. Someone told me long ago, though, that though it may appear that we have made many good incidental small decisions, the BIG decisions in life are made for us by a higher power. In retrospect, considering my life experience, I agree with that. The big decisions are somehow made for you.

Allow your senses to show you the way. Your dream starts with you; it is your own creation. As you see and feel it come to life and blossom, great passion unfolds. Old habits, on the otherhand, are often inherited from someone else. Because you did not originate them, they hold very little meaning beyond the comfort of repetition.

Hello Doreen,

You own your dream, not others. They own theirs. If you ask them, they can only respond to your dream as a listener and not as an owner. If you decide that a dream is too big based on non-owner opinions, then you have their answer: the dream is too big. Be aware that we often go to others for their advise on what we should or should not do because of our own inauthenticity: We don't really believe in it ourselves. Or, we don't believe in ourselves. Don't misunderstand the feeling of overwhelm with the need to know exactly how the dream will come about. It simply doesn't work that way. You can't know how, initially. But we think we should. You will never know all the "hows", but this does not mean the dream won't or can't happen. If you seek advise, seek a professional and ask them not "Can this happen?", but rather "How can this be made to happen?" Remember, anything is possible.

I would offer to you to sit back and write out all the ways people and businesses will benefit from your dream. Learn from what you write. This helps to bring forth a sense of reality to the dream. If you can visualize others enjoying your dream, it becomes more possible for the dream to become real. This is just one of the many steps to take towards making the dream reality. There are many, many more.

Finally, don't think of money, think in terms of "who" can share your dream to help you make it reality. It is a pipe dream if you are not committed to doing all you can do to make it happen and to engage others. If a "this won't happen" shuts you down, then almost anything will shut you down along the way. Hope this helps.

Melody Cofield
Help, need advice:

Is it possible dreams can be too big to achieve and you know the result of the dream could change the way we think, the way we live, the way businesses do business? What if the dream could save businesses $1000s if not $10,000s a year and quite possibly get 500-5000 people in jobs in one year?

What if the dream could save the state billions of dollars?

Could a dream die because it's success relies on a significant amount of money to get it started and keep alive?

Because individuals I have shared the dream with immediately say "it will never work" I should listen and not bother?

What if, literally, just finding a building perfect for the dream, sits on 13 acres, 51,320 sq ft, complete with auditorium, classroom style rooms, offices , 3 wings and other glorious amenities and no coincidence a couple weeks ago meeting 2 ladies who understand the dream and believe in its possibility (the dream is much bigger now ladies) and the gut says "go for it"

Do I listen to family who say it won't work because I'll never get the money to support it (yes, it's millions a year).

Is this real? Is it a pipe dream? Or regardless of whatever anyone says to tell me why it won't work (and really not have any just cause as to why other than money) and just by finding people who have the same passion as I, standing shoulder to shoulder, all working together not just helping individuals find jobs but lives are changed forever?

What if the Microsoft guy didn't do what he did. What if the apple guy didn't do what he did. And others....

What would you do?
